Born in 1970 in Los Angeles, Steve P. Breen grew up in neighboring Orange County as the eldest of seven children. He graduated Huntington Beach High School in 1988 and attended the University of California at Riverside where he earned a B.A. in political science. It was at U.C.R. that Steve started drawing editorial cartoons for his school paper, The Highlander. In 1991, Steve won the Scripps Howard Charles M. Schultz Award as top college cartoonist and the John Locher Award for Outstanding College Editorial Cartoonist. He was influenced by cartoonists such as Jeff MacNelly, Pat Oliphant, Mike Peters, Paul Conrad, Dick Locher, and Don Wright.

Steve was about to become a high school history teacher when the Asbury Park Press offered him a job in the art department in July of 1994. Ray Ollwerther, Executive Editor/Vice President of News at the Press, made Steve full-time editorial cartoonist in 1996.

His editorial cartoons appear regulary in several Gannett New Jersey Newspapers including the Home News Tribune and Ocean County Observer. His cartoons are nationally syndicated by Copley News Service and regularly appear in Newsweek, The New York Times, and USA Today. In April of 1998, Steve was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning.
